What is an Electronic LIMS?

A laboratory information management system (LIMS), sometimes referred to as a laboratory information system (LIS) or laboratory management system (LMS), is a software-based solution with features that support a modern laboratory’s operations. Key features include—but are not limited to—workflow and data tracking support, flexible architecture, and data exchange interfaces, which fully “support its use in regulated environments”. The features and uses of a LIMS have evolved over the years from simple sample tracking to an enterprise resource planning tool that manages multiple aspects of laboratory informatics.

The Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) enables laboratory users to coordinate patient sample data received from health facilities. LIMS enables the effective management of sample data and automates laboratory workflows, integrates laboratory equipment, and manages health commodity supplies at the PCR labs.

LIMS is a web-based platform that allows 100% data visibility on dashboard, cross platform with offline support and provides robust functionalities to both lab and facility staff to automate a wide array of lab and facility processes from sample/patient registration to results return.

The LIMS platform also serves as an avenue to provide insight to key decision makers in-country; primarily the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH), on the current testing landscape for various disease areas. Additional modules of the platform provide functionalities for areas such as patient and process management, stock monitoring via the commodity management module and data visualization via the LIMS dashboard.

LIMS is constantly being expanded to meet in-country needs and facilitate targeted interventions to improve patient health outcomes across various disease areas.

LIMS supports the following three main functions namely.

Sample Management

Sample management is one of the fundamental functions of LIMS. This feature enables the lab user to streamline laboratory processes and reduce errors. LIMS provides detailed, accurate, and unique records of each sample and stores it securely reducing the chances of data being inaccurate. LIMS in addition generates accurate data on the laboratory users that recorded a sample, the originating facility, the destination of the sample results, and the sample repository box number.

Workflow Management

LIMS plays a pivotal role in streamlining workflow such as worksheet generation and management within the lab. LIMS supports user-defined role-based access and enables team members within a PCR lab to have access to workflow enabling the administrator to group authorities and privileges into a single role and then grant this role to the users that need those authorities and privileges to perform their jobs.

Reporting and Inventory Management

LIMS supports capturing and managing laboratory data and enables users to generate reports such as sample data, test results, and commodity inventory. LIMS supports commodity management and provides supply chain managers access to quality, real-time data on stock availability at the PCR lab store. These features enable users to identify the sample backlog in the lab, intra-lab turnaround time and track equipment usage for accurate inventory management
